Mirroring comes to Android, with a catch

Rooted Nexus 5 users are able to mirror their display to Chromecast

We’ve been expecting it for a while, but now it’s here. Cyanogen’s Koushik Dutta has made it possible for Android users to mirror their Android display to Chromecast. But, before you run off trying to do this with your smartphone, you should know there’s a few caveats.

First, you must have a Nexus 5 handset with root access. According to Dutta, this is the because it’s only device with a¬†hardware vp8 encoder. Once you’ve got that, you’ll have to follow these next few steps.

Not only will users be able to cast to Chromecast, but to Chome and Apple TV as well. Looking down the road, Dutta says this should work as a proper application in the Google Play store – without root. Once a few bugs and adjustments are worked out, this could open the doors up as far back as Android 4.1 devices.
